Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Public employees everywhere are under attack from every angle; in the workplace, in the media and in your own families. Now more than ever, CSEA members must defend the work that they do.
In order to do your work justice it is important that each and every one of you tell your own personal story. Tell someone what your job title is and what the work is that you do on a daily bases. Let your friends, neighbors and family members know that you provide the most essential services in this community.
Remind them that if the services you provide are cut that there will be consequences to the residents of our community. For example: “If we lose four plow drivers in the Town of Wherever, residential streets may no longer be cleared in time for your morning commute.” Or “If the probation officers are cut the public safety of your neighbor is at risk.” “If the Nursing services or support staff services are cut at Monroe Community Hospital our elderly and disabled members of this county will not have the care that they are entitled too.”
We must be diligent in reminding people that we too are taxpayers and members of the community.
So the next time you are in a conversation with someone and they start to comment on the “Public Employees are this or that” put your hand out and introduce yourself as the “RN who takes care of your family at MCH”, “the Pure waters tech who keeps your drinking water clean,” “the DOT person who makes sure all the signal lights are working,” “the DMV person who waits on you for your license,” and so on.
As CSEA Region President often says; “Never be a shamed of the work you do in public employment”. We need to ensure the public knows about the essential services we provide in their community every single day.
Please join with all the CSEA members across New York State to get the word out that we are the people that make New York work and of course: “MONROE COUNTY WORKS, BECAUSE WE DO”
Yours in Solidarity,
Cris Zaffuto, President
